Fantastic Monkstown and Kinsale Cork Wedding

Laura and Gary had their Fantastic Monkstown and Kinsale Cork Wedding wedding ceremony in the Sacred Heart Church in Monkstown (Laura’s uncle Fr. Edward Murphy conducted the ceremony) and their reception in Actons Hotel on the waterfront in Kinsale.

Laura had wanted a garden for the location shoot in the afternoon, between the church and the hotel. We couldn’t think of anywhere that really worked on the way to Kinsale, so Laura contacted several golf clubs on the route who couldn’t let us in as they had golf tournaments on, and I drove between Kinsale and the city before the wedding looking for likely locations but without much success.

Finally, Laura had the brilliant idea of looking around Monkstown itself for locations. We didn’t get a garden, but the pier opposite The Bosun Bar and the roads above the village worked out perfectly. The fact that it was a stunning day weather wise didn’t hurt either.

After the shoot we made our way over to Kinsale for the drinks reception in Actons garden and then on to dinner and the speeches. After dinner we had arranged a night shoot, firstly at the mast across the road and then some backlit shots outside the hotel itself.

Then, it was time for the first dance and Laura and Gary wowed their guests with a tightly choreographed dance routine before everyone at the wedding hit the dancefloor.

I sent a sneak peek selection of the photographs the day after the wedding and here is what Laura and Gary wrote back…

Hi Dermot ,
Wow We just had a look , I’m speechless . The photographs you took are admirable . We are absolutely in love with them. They are so tasteful and classic the photos near the Golf club and on the pier are handsome. And I love all the arty shots with flowers and rings etc. Thank you so much for everything , especially all your help in the morning getting us out the door. My dad reckons we would have been lost without you. I’m so glad we booked you. Can’t wait to get get the usb/ album.

Romantic February West Cork Wedding Photographs

Irene and Chris had their early springtime wedding in the beautiful St. Fachtna’s Church in Rosscarbery. The weather was chilly and showery but we managed to avoid the rain throughout the day.

Chris brought a lot of his Scottish heritage and culture to the wedding. There were thistles in the bouquets, a bagpiper at the church and to lead them into dinner. There was a beautiful Thistle and Shamrock entwined pin in Chris’s kilt and a huge amount of men in kilts attending the celebration.

After the ceremony we went down the Pier Road in Rosscarbery for photographs with the wedding party. Irene had spent a lot of her childhood summers playing down along this road so this location had relevance and significance for Irene and her sisters.

After the Pier Road photos, we let the bridesmaids and groomsmen head on to the hotel and Irene, Chris and I went to a stunningly romantic location in Castlefreke Woods that I had found on a recce earlier that morning. The trees along the pathway formed a arch that enclosed us and created a tunnel of green and dappled light. I knew that this would be a perfect spot for some timeless backlit portraits that would compliment Irene’s stunning dress and Chris’s traditional Scottish outfit.

I like to work fast so that my photographs appear casual and that the bride and groom don’t get bored and fed up with too much delay, so we were back in the car in about 10 minutes and on our way to the drink reception in Fernhill House Hotel in Clonakilty.

We arrived at Fernhill at about 4.30 which allowed a good hour for the drinks reception and the formal family photographs. At around 6pm, the sound of the bagpipes were heard echoing around the corridors of the hotel as Irene and Chris followed their piper through the dining room and on to the top table.

I had a sneak peek selection of 100 photographs ready to send to Irene and Chris by lunchtime on the day after the wedding, here is what Irene txted me in reply…

Dermot, I just don’t think there are words to thank you enough for doing such a wonderful job on Friday. You kept the whole ship running so smoothly and the magnificent photos were worth the bracing cold!! I absolutely love the photos and cannot wait to see the rest. Thanks a million, Irene and Chris!

Italian Wedding in West Cork

Greta and Luca had their Italian wedding in West Cork on perhaps the wettest day I have ever experienced at Gougane Barra. The rain was so heavy that the gated entrance to the church flooded and I had to climb over a wall to get back to my car. Despite the terrible weather, Greta and Luca, who are Italian but work in Clonakilty, had a wonderful ceremony with their friends and relations.

We then moved on to Clonakilty, and had some wedding photographs in Spillers Lane and the world famous De Barra’s pub. Ray Blackwell, of De Barra’s, very kindly let us have the run of the premises for our photographs and the customers were delighted to see Greta and Luca in the bar. Usually the bride gets all the attention on her wedding day, but Luca’s amazing suit drew some admiring glances and comments as well.

Next stop was the reception venue, Deasy’s Restaurant in Ring. Luca is a chef and the food element of the day was really important to them both. Deasy’s has a fantastic reputation and head chef Caitlin Ruth and her team served an amazing 5 course meal to the 40 guests (me included).

Next to cooking, photography is Luca’s passion and their wedding photographs were really important to them. We were disappointed not to be able to have any photographs in the grounds of Gougane Barra because of the weather, but the god of photography smiled on us that evening. The rain stopped, the clouds parted and we had the most amazing sunset.

We went to the pier in Ring as the sun was going down and did some creative off-camera flash wedding photography. Even if I say so myself, the photographs are something else!

All that was left to do was head back to Deasy’s for the dancing…

The Importance Of Wedding Albums In This Digital Age…

They say that there are two things left after a wedding, the rings and the photographs. Well, your rings are pretty hardy and can look after themselves, but your photographs need some special care and attention. That is why wedding albums are so important in this digital age.

If you just have your wedding photographs on a disc or a USB drive, they are very vulnerable. Discs get damaged and lost, operating systems change and files can no longer be read or opened.

How many VHS tapes have you got gathering dust, and how many wedding videos are no longer watchable without being transferred onto a disc, which can be damaged or lost…

If you take the time after your wedding to go through your photographs to choose your favourites and then get your photographer to create an album for you, you are creating a historical document for your family.

You may not look through it too many times after you first get it, but I guarantee that as the years roll on and especially if you have children, your wedding album will become a treasured family heirloom.

With the modern storybook albums, your photographer isn’t just putting pictures into a book, they are creating a visual story of your day. Many modern photographers also have excellent graphic design skills and the computer software to design layouts and spreads to compliment your images and bring your wedding day to life.

To enjoy your wedding day and to have great photographs to treasure afterwards, my two pieces of advice to any couple who are planning their wedding are… Pick a photographer that you can get on with, as they will be with you for most of the day and most importantly, get a wedding album!!

Wedding photography review for Dermot Sullivan

My fiance and I weren’t local to the Cork/Clonakilty area and initially found Dermot through online research and our choice was soon validated through a few other local suppliers we were working with to organise our wedding.

Dermot made us feel very at home and comfortable from the moment we met him in Clonakilty to talk through our big day and helped us shape what we wanted from our wedding photography.

On the wedding day, Dermot’s local knowledge of Clonakilty was invaluable and he moved between the groom and brides houses before the wedding, the church and evening reception to capture some great and the all important shots!

We are both very pleased with the final photos and album Dermot produced for us.
